These are the first program covers that I
illustrated for John Scher at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic
NJ, On The Boardwalk at Asbury Park, and the first concert ever
at Giants Stadium. The Boardwalk included Convention Hall,
Paramount Theatre and rarely—thank goodness—the
Casino Arena. I don’t recall any programs for the Casino
but I do recall one spot op (sorry, Ira) who passed out from
all the heat in the projection booth. Thankfully Convention
Hall was healthfully air conditioned.
Anecdote:
Convention Hall was a bit of a nightmare for shows because the
stage was small and the room was very shallow, wide, and
“live”. But we could see the city of lights that
was the Russian fishing fleet out on the Atlantic, and we also
did shows at the Paramount Theatre, which had a real fly loft.
But, like almost everything else in that town, that fly loft
was upside down: The weights were up top rather than on the
stage floor, so balancing the lighting pipes was quite a
challenge. The catwalk was only 12-inches wide and there was no
rail. For icing on that cake, the pigeon poop was prolific and
quite visible against black iron. So here you are, losing your
balance 60-feet above the stage floor, and the only thing to
grab is a pipe fully topped with fresh pigeon poop. Oh my.
The Capitol was acoustically wonderful
with clear sight lines from every seat to the stage, but it had
such a shallow stage that visiting bands had to treat the
theatre like a club date. That was good for the crew, the bands
and the audience because there was less work and more fun for
everyone. —Moyssi
